  • Space Willing N Dealing will host Kim Hyewon's solo exhibition, "<Day and Night" from December 15, 2023, to January 17, 2024.

In her first solo exhibition, "<Thickness of Picture>," held in 2022, Kim Hye-won introduced the methodology of drawing while focusing on the theme of 'movement of space' inherent in the images. In contrast, for this exhibition, she presents images that express the 'movement of temporality.' The artist's canvases predominantly capture existing surrounding landscapes.

Kim Hyewon’s canvases primarily capture existing surrounding landscapes, ranging from busy subway stations, the interiors of subways or buses, familiar interiors of bakeries, to the vibrant walls of urban and shopping meccas. In these various landscapes, the bustling presence of people has been omitted. What remains are various architectural structures that formed the identity of the locations. The composition elements of these structures are highlighted, emphasizing perspective and revealing a strong sense of space that might go unnoticed in everyday life.

In this exhibition, the concept of 'time' set by Kim Hyewon especially refers to capturing changes in the landscape based on the movement of light, revealing the time encapsulated in the length of the day and the seasons, influenced by the rotation and revolution. This approach draws attention to the presence of sunlight, which has a more significant impact on perception, as a material capable of various color expressions, stemming from the artist's established sense of space. Kim typically uses watercolor as her primary medium; however, contrary to the usual light and transparent effects associated with watercolor, she utilizes a medium called Arabian gum to craft a heavy and dense canvas.

This medium solidifies on the canvas, creating an uneven surface texture and generating a unique matte effect. Layering thin applications of paint on top of it, she skillfully expresses the delicate realistic representation, density, and depth of color, emphasizing the 'temporality' inherent in the images. Kim Hyewon defines 'images' as optical phenomena perceived visually. She captures familiar places through photographs and decides how to depict them by observing the images presented in the photographs. Subsequently, she engages in meticulous drawing towards a completed image in her imagination, utilizing her technique to bring the drawing to fruition. In her view, the time spent drawing is dedicated entirely to the manifestation of drawing skills. Even her earlier involvement in knitting during the initial stages of her work reflects a dichotomous approach between recognizing a specific idea and the creative process of realizing it. This dualistic attitude is evident in her clear distinction between the stages of conceptualizing and implementing the creation.
