Exhibition Information
Barakat Seoul presents Masterpieces of Chinese Art in The Barakat Collection, a presentation of China’s immemorial history and beautiful art. Featuring Chinese art ranging from clay figures created during the Han Dynasty to quintessentially elegant Sui Dynasty sculptural work, exotic three-color ware from the Tang Dynasty, elaborate Guanyin (觀音) statue work from the Ming Dynasty, and luxurious crafts from the Qing Dynasty, this exhibition by Barakat Seoul recreates the splendor of the Emperor’s gardens and collection rooms. The gardens that brought nature into residential spaces as well as the indoor duobaoge (多寶格) used to display precious treasures in the imperial household were both products of the desire to create and possess beauty, achieving this synthesis in different ways. Rather than being some clumsy form of artistic supremacism—following the forms of art without regard for human history—this was an effort to enrich daily life by infusing the aesthetic and practical in tangible ways. Adopting this same aesthetic, Masterpieces of Chinese Art in The Barakat Collection invites the visitor inside the garden where Water-Moon Guanyin (水月觀音) rested and the golden collection rooms in which storied works of art were placed. Just as Marco Polo wrote his Book of the Marvels of the World after being enchanted by Eastern culture, we look forward to another fantastic travelogue on ancient Chinese art emerging from this journey with Barakat Seoul. ※ In order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus infection, Barakat Seoul will be open by appointment only. We also ask that all visitors to Masterpieces of Chinese Art in the Barakat Collection please observe personal hygiene regulations such as wearing a surgical mask.
