이미 크뇌벨(Klaus Wolf Knoeble)은 1940년 독일 데사우에서 태어났다. 바우하우스의 전통을 다루었던 다름슈타트 공예학교에서 크뇌벨과 그의 동료였던 레이너 기스(Rainer Giese, 1942-74)는 그들의 우정과 결속력을 상징하기 위해 "ich mit ihm"의 축약어 “이미(Imi)”라는 가명을 공유했으며 지금의 ‘이미 크뇌벨’로 알려지게 되었다. 이들은 1964년 요셉 보이스의 뉴스와 이미지를 보고 그 새로움과 혁신에 매료되어 보이스가 있던 뒤셀도르프 예술 아카데미로 옮긴다. 특히 DIA:Beacon에서 장기 전시 중인 대표작 ‘19번 방(Raum 19)’(1968)은 크뇌벨이 뒤셀도르프 예술 아카데미에서 보이스의 지도 하에 동료작가들과 함께 새로운 예술 개념과 실천 방법을 끊임없이 연구했던 장소를 실제 크기에 맞추어 특별 제작한 것이다. 디아 재단은 후원할 작가를 먼저 선정하고, 이들 작품을 집중적으로 구매한 것으로 유명하며, 미국 화단에선 디아 재단의 후원 자체가 성공을 의미한다. 크뇌벨의 첫 전시는 1968년 이미 기스와 함께한 “IMI + IMI” 전으로, 1970년 이후 카셀 도큐멘타에 4차례 초대되었으며 스테델릭 미술관(1980), 쿤스트뮤지엄 본(1983) 등 유수의 미술관에서 전시회를 가졌다. 볼프스부르크 미술관에서 “이미 크뇌벨. 1966-2014 작업” 전시로 대규모의 회고전이 진행되기도 했으며 뒤셀도르프 미술관(2012), 베를린 구겐하임 미술관(2009), 샌프란시스코 미술관(2007)등 주요 개인전이 있다. 그의 작품은 미국 뉴욕현미술관, DIA:Beacon, 워커아트센터, 비엔나 알베르티나 박물관, 네덜란드 헤이그 시립미술관, 과천국립현대미술관 등 세계 유명 미술관에 소장되어 있다. 현재 크뇌벨은 독일 뒤셀도르프에 거주하며 작업 중이다.
