1953년 서울에서 태어난 이상남은 기호와 도상을 이용한 기하학적 추상 회화로 잘 알려져 있다. 1970년대 대구현대미술제, 도쿄 센트럴미술관의 《한국현대미술의 단면전》, 상파울루 비엔날레 등 국내외 주요 전시에 활발히 참여하며 회화에 대한 이론적 질문과 실험을 계속하던 그는 1981년 뉴욕으로 떠나 자신만의 예술적 언어를 모색하였다. '기하학적 추상화'라 말할 수 있는 이상남의 작품에는 다양한 도상의 이미지와 기호가 등장한다. 작가는 이러한 이미지의 가독성과 표의성을 의도적으로 거부하고, 특정 대상에 대한 재현을 지양하며, 기존의 인식과 고정관념, 전통을 부정하는 사고방식을 채택하였다. 이러한 그의작품은자신이살아온도시와장소의풍경,그리고자기삶속여정과궤적을담은‘마음의 풍경화’이다. 이상남 작가는 경기도미술관(2010), 폴란드 포즈난 공항(2012), 주일본 대한민국 대사관(2013) 등 공공기관에 대형 벽화 작품을 영구 설치한 바 있다. 또한 그는 국립현대미술관, 서울대학교 미술관, 미국 워싱턴 D.C.의 스미스소니언 미술관 등 유수한 기관에서 열린 단체전에 참여했다.
