Tatsuhito Horikoshi, who works in Tokyo, portrays boys and girls. The optimistic sensitivity and innocence of youth, but also the cruelty and undefined sexual identity are expressed through a unique, delicate artistic language and colors. The artist, who is active worldwide with solo exhibitions in Hong Kong (2020) and Paris (2022), successfully debuted on the Korean art scene with Gallery Joeun in Kiaf Seoul (2023). His works are collected in the Mr. I n Collection in Japan and the Pigozzi Collection in Switzerland. I studied the history of Western drawing and the technique of oil painting at an art university. However, what made me first notice the beauty of drawings was the large amount of manga overflowing around me. I arrive there, no matter what, when I think back on my starting point as an artist. Thus, I want to incorporate the elements of that subculture, which moved and excited me a lot, into my works. Therefore, I have adopted a way to draw characters in my works with expressions that place them at a distance from reality. They are boys and girls who exist like characters in anime and manga. Also, something like my desire for a transformation is being projected. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have felt that our particular bond with art and pop culture, such as anime and manga, has steadily strengthened. The phenomenon of people transcending borders and cultures to empathize with each other and the affinity with the masses are very interesting. While continuing to create things, I experience many moments where I lose sight of what I should draw. During such times, I look back on the past and set my eyes on reality again. With this my confused thoughts are reset. That repetitive activity has become an important process for my creations. What should I draw? I wanted to stop at once and return to my starting point as an artist. Through this exhibition, I want to discover something that will brighten up my lonely life for a long time. Artist Note 2024
