Career
Born in Munich and currently based in London and Margate, UK, Sophie von Hellermann (b.1975) constructs her paintings from a vast collection of narratives spanning mythology, history, and literature. Her pastel-colored paintings, rendered with soft, loose brushstrokes that blur the lines between subject and background, evoke a sense of lyricism while also conveying a powerful expressionistic emotion. Von Hellermann received her BFA from Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf and an MFA from the Royal College of Art, London, UK. Since 2022, she has been a professor of painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. She has held solo exhibitions at Brücke Museum, Berlin, Germany (2024) and Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, Belgium (2010).
