Heo Suyoung was born in Seoul, South Korea. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts and Design, and finished his graduate in the School of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He works with definite Korean style, making his work recognizable as being Korean. Heo Suyoung has been obsessively tried to pack all elements that he chose as his subject into one canvas. Motivated by images in the encyclopedia, such as plants and insects, his work pours all images into a canvas from the first page to the last. 100 Caterpillars with Nepenthes is a whole book turned into a painting. Like the process of transcribing a book, every image is moved on to the canvas. These reconstructed images are a record of the memory of countless visual information created during the process, and is discovering the unrevealed relationships between images from the book. Yangsan-dong is one of his painting series which he paints the landscapes of Yangsan-dong for about a year. The artist repeatedly painted the 4 seasons over and over again, on top of the previous layer on the same canvas. Naturally, the first layers became the background and the later layers became the foreground. Although the main subject of the painting changed from the photos from the encyclopedia to the landscapes nearby, his method of packing every subject into one canvas shares the same idea as his previous painting series.
Heo won the Grand Prize at the 14th Shinsegae Art Award at Gwangju Shinsegae Gallery in 2012. He was also selected at the Competition Exhibition of Insa Art Space, supported by Arts Council Korea in May 2013, and had his solo exhibition in Insa Art Space of the Art council Korea showing his Yangsan-dong series. He participated in Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul. A majority of his work has been collected in Seoul: at the Zaha Museum, OCI Museum, Seoul Tech Museum of Art, Art Bank, Sinsegae Collection, Kolon, and Seoul Eulji Hospital.
