  • Web-retro has historically re-examined the new art that has been tried over the network, noting that over the last 30 years, the World Wide Web has fundamentally changed the technical environmental conditions in which communication, image production and consumption, and artistic practice take place. The 1990s and 2000s were a time when artists explored their roles, rules, possibilities and limitations with the advent of a new medium called the Internet. The exhibition looks back at this time and tries to picture how the custom of art has been transformed through the Internet.

To this end, we will reconstruct three aspects based on the characteristics of Internet art. "How has Internet art looked at and related to society?" "How does it reflect the change in perception of an individual's existence and image?" Finally, "How has Internet art expanded the boundaries of art at that time?"

In answer to these questions, I would like to introduce the following works. First, the works that used cyberspace as an alternative space and tactical media to critically reveal the areas of social intervention and concealment, and secondly, the experiments that reviewed the new sense or past art media created by screens, virtual reality and real-time remote presence, and third, the short stories of the Internet that showed that everyone could have been creators, commercial and public communication, were also inclusive.

The exhibition also showcases an online archive project that links historic works as important as it deals with Internet art, a chronology that encompasses technology, society and cultural history, and archives that show the activities of the time. In addition, the project was carried out to restore some works that did not run in the rapidly changing technology environment. The archive project was carried out to introduce various artistic attempts at home and abroad and to establish a topographic map to look at the period, culture and technological contexts of Internet art together to provide information on each flow with longer breathing, and to classify these attempts by time and characteristics to lay the foundation for in-depth research.

Hopefully, the exhibition will serve as a starting point for research into Internet art that has yet to be systematically organized in Korean contemporary art, as well as the collection and preservation of Internet art with non-material characteristics, and even the nature of the current post-Internet art.
