My Present (2022)

Held in February and March of 2021, Project one at a time* was my experiment that spanned over 5 weeks. I wanted to spend enough time with each work and carefully observe what was going on inside myself during these processes. If the work is what reveals the artist’s thought process, it is the writing I produce that uncovers such contemplation. During the period of 30 days, 720 hours, a total of six works by five artists have passed through my body with some still living in me, allowing me to imagine their alternative lives. Through the sustained gaze for a set amount of time, I was pushed to my limits and could observe how I reacted and adjusted to the situation. While some moments lasted longer, 4 hours seemed to flash by. My record of the time spent studying these pieces was about listening to them speak, but perhaps it was also a time that I encountered myself. In slow breaths, I shared my thoughts with the works and found myself getting close to the artists’ thoughts. As time passed, that distance repeatedly narrowed and widened, maintaining an irreconcilable gap.
