Exhibition Information
Pritzker prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura has been a true representative of Portuguese modernism along with his long-term ally Alvaro Siza for the last four decades. Porto-born architect acknowledges not only the modern language and materials of architecture but also has a deep understanding and care of traditional architecture. Whilst his works are deeply rooted in locality, quite often they also reveal a clear contrast from it. Although he has been practicing at Porto where he was born and grew up, his teaching career in various prestigious schools explains that he was never remote from the international architectural scene. Traditionally architectural drawings have been the most effective tool and language for most architects, but Souto de Moura's sketches, drawings, and modeling are particularly inspiring since they are not just dealing with the physical conditions of the site and the building but also reveal the concerns and the vision of the architect. In this exhibition ‘Journey of an Architect’, we are chasing the sequential process of how the initial thoughts of the architect are translated into sketches and drawings, how those drawings are developed into the architectural scheme, and finally how those architectural schemes are materialized into the building.
