Exhibition Information
Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Chung Zuyoung’s solo exhibition Meteorologica from February 15 to March 26, 2023. The exhibition features around 60 paintings including the Mountain series capturing the Alps, and new works under the theme of “meteorology.” Chung Zuyoung has been contemplating upon the traditional genre of landscape painting from a contemporary perspective. Chung’s works question our actions and attitudes in viewing and comprehending landscape and its interpretations. By painting Dobongsan and Bukhansan mountains, the Alps and more, the artist explores the twofold “gap” of the painted world, between tradition and modernity, the parts and the whole, concept and existence, landscape and its visual representation, and the abstract and the real. Under the theme of “meteorology,” the artist now depicts unfixed natural phenomena on canvas, such as storm clouds and cumulus clouds hovering over the sky, moments of sunrise and sunset, and fog and black clouds. Instead of constructing a solid form on the screen, the artist poetically captures the colorful abstract sky landscape by layering multiple hues. Her unique brushstrokes, painterly yet drawing-esque, create rich texture on canvas. From the mountains and rocks to the landscapes of the sky and weather, Meteorologica offers a glimpse of how Chung Zuyoung’s artistic world has shifted from “representable to un-representable, recognizable to unrecognizable” in multiple shades.
