Exhibition Information
Gana Art is pleased to present Image and Matter, an exhibition examining diversity within Korean contemporary art. The participating artists have developed a wide range of works that interpret internal imagery and material qualities in unique ways. Park Youngnam focuses on the innate physical properties of the canvas itself by painting with his hands. Exploring the vast sources of nature and using only color, his innermost self seems to resound within his paintings like a song. Meanwhile, the wide creative spectrum of Yeesookyung is expressed in diverse forms such as painting, sculpture, and performance. Currently, her practice centers around experimental work as she seeks to combine multiple heterogeneous elements into one artwork. Minjung artist Lim Oksang creates realistic images using easily accessible materials such as soil to tell realistic stories closer to life. Maria Chang expresses materiality through layered matière. Piling plaster, sand, and gel stone onto the canvas, she creates artworks that carefully tread the border between sculpture and painting. Huh Myoungwook on the other hand, tends to prefer traditional media. He creates his own colors with lacquer and natural dyes which he then layers repeatedly. Huh’s work is characterized by the harmonious blending of light, shadow, and matière created by paint and lacquer on the canvas. Gana Art hopes that this exhibition, with its themes of imagery and materiality, becomes a meaningful space in which viewers might get a glimpse into the flexible nature of Korean contemporary art.
