Exhibition Information
The exhibition title “Curtain” represents a structure that typically exists between the inside and outside, much like a window, but rather than being a physically solid boundary, it serves as a layer performing its function privately. In this exhibition, the curtain is conceived as an object with randomness and continuity in the gap between what is revealed and what is concealed, encapsulating Hwang Wonhae’s fascination and direction regarding the city’s inner imagery. While the artist has previously conducted research leading from the similarity extracted from various layers of the city, encompassing both two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects, towards a flat screen with no hierarchy, in the exhibition “Curtain,” the artist focuses on the process where the city’s superficial and physical images settle into internal imagery. The new order created by continuous horizontal images such as the screen and the facade of the building on which it is reflected gives form to the canvas and weaves it by adding accidental shapes to the rhythm embodied by the city. On the screen, diverse elements such as thin and transparent forms and volumes that are like imaginary illusions, delicate and distorted movements, the spine of a vulnerable animal, and structures embodying variability are blended and collided, giving rise to new internal imagery that escapes from the city’s facade and reveals new patterns within repetitions and variations. As the artist navigates within an organic space and follows the visual form and rhythm of the city, we can also look out into the world from the most advantageous point between ‘inside and outside,’ ‘what is revealed and what is concealed,’ and share the emotions of contemporary individuals.
