Exhibition Information
Jaewon Kim’s solo exhibition, “Hazy Scenes” invites viewers to interweave everyday objects and fragmented scenes into distinct stories. Photographs devoid of narratives and a video without a clear subject meld with the individual experience, propagating into multiple voices that evoke deeply personal nostalgia while resonating with universal experiences. By vividly depicting the hazy scenes as they are, the exhibition ultimately suggests that we can all be witnesses to significant events and the protagonist of the story.(Gyusik Lee) *Some works contain scenes of sexual nature. [Artist Bio] Jaewon Kim (b. 1991) primarily utilizes video, photography, and writing to explore the expansive nature of queerness and HIV/AIDS, contextualizing the past, present, and future as multi-layered experiences. His work questions and traces how the force of the disease reshapes the meaning of and encounter with the invisible and excluded. His recent solo exhibitions include “Romantic Fantasy” (SPACE Four One Three, Seoul, 2021), “Back then, If Bell Doesn't Ring” (ROOM 806-2, Seoul, 2020). His videos have screened at “DWA2022: Being & Belonging” (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2023), “Seoul International PRIDE Film Festival” (Seoul, 2021), and “Busan International Video Art Festival” (Space Heem, Busan, 2017). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Korea and internationally, including “HIV Science as Art” (Metro Arts, Brisbane, 2023), “Flare” (WESS, Seoul, 2023), “After That Blue” (Fragment Gallery, New York, 2023), “Now What?” (Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, 2023), “The Body You Want” (Asian Arts Initiative, Philadelphia, 2023), “Actually, the Dead Are Not Dead” (Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul&Anseong, 2021) among many others.
