Exhibition Information

  • Rosemarie Trockel: Selected Drawings, Objects and Video Works, organized by Sungkok Art Museum, is an international touring exhibition curated by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa). Rosemarie Trockel, a leading German artist, has built a rich and complex body of work that transcends single genres or styles, one which engages with a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation. Her works encompass multiple discourses on society, politics, and philosophy, offering a critical perspective on existing art systems and sociocultural norms.

Since the 1980s, Trockel has been interested in the identity and social status of women in contemporary society, creating numerous works that disrupt the male-dominated art system. In her knitted paintings made with wool and pieces utilizing hotplates, Trockel combines objects traditionally considered feminine and domestic with concepts bearing masculine connotations, such as industrial machinery, commercial culture, abstract painting, and minimalism. In this way she questions stereotypes about femininity and blurs the binary division between female and male. However, Trockel does not wish for her works to be discussed solely from a gender perspective. The humor, irony, and rich art historical references inherent in her works allow for diverse interpretations. By maintaining a critical stance against sociocultural prejudices, Trockel has continuously created works that stimulate viewers’ imaginations, generating new meanings along the way.

The exhibition Rosemarie Trockel: Selected Drawings, Objects and Video Works showcases the extensive spectrum of Trockel’s work from the 1980s to the early 2000s. This exhibition particularly focuses on her drawings, alongside objects, photographs, videos, and knitted paintings. Drawing can serve as a sketch for a completed picture but also as a means for an artist to freely express their thoughts. In Trockel’s drawings, the combination of disparate elements, transformations and inversions, and sharp humor that characterize her work are vividly captured in simple lines and shapes. Through this exhibition—one centered on her drawings—we hope you will appreciate the many facets of Trockel’s works and reflect on her critical mindset, which runs deep through both German and Korean society.
