Exhibition Information
Gallery Chosun will host Ahn Sanghoon's solo exhibition, HANDS AND STAINS, from February 14 to April 27, 2025. This exhibition marks Ahn Sanghoon's return to Gallery Chosun after three years and reflects his continued exploration of the uncertainty of time and existence—an inquiry that gains new depth as he reaches his fifties. Through this exhibition, the artist delves into ongoing painterly experiments that emerge from these themes. Scenes of being scattered, covered, flowing down, and dispersing again will be reenacted, yet inevitably fail. And yet, they will persist in existence. What remains unchanged is the fact that they were there and have been represented. (From the artist's note) The exhibition space is densely filled with approximately 80 works, leaving little to no empty space. The vast painterly scenes, saturated with stains of color, create the impression that the very medium of painting has been embodied, reacting as a tangible mass of material. Ahn Sanghoon's paintings are composed through a process of repeated decisions within uncertainty, oscillating between the fragmentary and the whole. This approach reflects not only his artistic practice but also a broader exploration of discovering new order and possibilities within uncertainty. Confronting the imperfect beauty and creative process, his works continue to exist at the intersection of hands and stains. The journey of embracing both persistence and unease unfolds even at this very moment.
