Gallery Hyundai presents Rock, Paper, Scissors: Transformation of Paper, as its final exhibition of 2025, highlighting the material, conceptual, and formal possibilities of paper. Featuring works by 27 pivotal artists in Korean modern and contemporary art—from the pioneers of first-generation abstraction and experimental art to those in media art, as well as mid-career and emerging artists active on both domestic and international stages—the exhibition showcases a wide spectrum of artistic experimentation mediated through paper. The three familiar words from the childhood game "Rock, Paper, Scissors" serve as a metaphor for three perspectives on paper. "Rock" embodies the artist’s act of grasping ideas and condensing thought, while also symbolizing the transformation of materiality as paper is crumpled, folded, and shaped into solid, three-dimensional forms. "Paper" stands for the medium’s inherent diversity—its openness, receptivity, and capacity for endless transformation. "Scissors" signifies the creative experimentation that cuts, layers, and subverts the flatness of paper. Ultimately, this exhibition seeks to expand the perception of paper beyond its conventional role as a support for drawing or a preparatory stage for painting. Instead, it positions paper as an autonomous artistic medium, one that serves as a point of departure for thought and a catalyst for material transformation, shaping distinct worlds grounded in versatility and imagination.
