Exhibition Information
The Artsonje Center will host the Lee Mi-rae's solo exhibition <Carriers> from July 23 to September 13. Lee Mi rae has been working on sculpture and installation, dealing with machines that operate on simple principles and materials that can be touched by hands. For Lee Mi-rae, a sculptor whose work is important to touch material with his hands, machines are an important factor that drives and repeats the movement of the material he touches. The new work, <Carrier's> (2020), which will be introduced for the first time in the exhibition, is a large kinetic sculpture using a hose pump and resembles an animal's digestive organs. This installation piece repeats the exercise of sucking, transporting and extracting mucous substances, and the sound is combed to match the machine's movement in the process of moving the mucus along the structure of the piece. This structure figuratively captures the conceptual approach of the past. In some tribes, it is said that Shaman performs a ritual of skinning Shaman so that he can react sensitively to the slightest provocation to meditate on other people's feelings. Lee Mi-rae gets a clue to the subversive power in this story known as oral. For Lee Mi-rae, sculpture is a centerpiece that senses everything that is not herself and triggers thoughts about her, as the keenly erecting tentacles of her senses, just like the state of a skinless Shaman. Exhibit «carriers» literally suggests an experience of being enveloped in the world in the most prominent and physical place, refluxing the primitive movements of various substances moving inside the body, such as blood, fetuses, pathogens and nutrients.
