Exhibition Information

Gallery Simon is pleased to present <Room for Reflection>, a solo exhibition by Airan Kang from 17 September to 14 November, 2020. Kang has contemplated the changes and meanings of books in the new media era. In her representative work “Lighting Book,” illuminating book sculptures create a new space of knowledge where they escape from their fixed contents, find their own meanings, and extend into infinite awareness. In the exhibition, Kang focuses not only on feminism-themed books in diverse disciplines such as literature, philosophy, sociology, and art history, but also on historically important female figures throughout the Korean history; elite women in the enlightenment period, the new women who studied abroad, and comfort women under Japanese colonialism. Based on her focus, she transforms the gallery space into a magnificent library where the audience can go through the tunnel of human intellectual heritage and contemplate on the contemporary discourses reinterpreted as media art.
