Exhibition Information

leeahn Gallery Daegu will host Nam Chun-mo's solo exhibition "Line in Space" from November 19 to December 31, 2020. From paintings to sculptures, Nam Chun-mo has pioneered a unique area of painting using polycoats and cottonwood using the motif of "sun." This is the fourth individual exhibition at the Lian Gallery after a large-scale individual exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany.

Nam Chun-mo has conducted various experiments to express space on its own. In addition to large installation sculptures, the exhibition will showcase 24 new works, including a flat-panel painting that shows the concept of strokes in space and the expansion of them. If the existing relief painting wanted to express the spatial relationship between lines and light, that is, the painting work introduced this time represents the space created by the lines hitting each other on the canvas screen.

His work begins with the exploration of the source of painting, which aims to demonstrate the purity of painting through its basic element, lines. Inspired by the way of expressing the margins and space using the lines of the previous artists, Nam Chun-mo sees the lines as an independent element and gives meaning to themselves. As can be seen in the exhibition title "Line in Space", Nam Chun-mo places various lines on the screen and explores how the lines change in space.

First of all, in the series (2020), various lines overlapped and thick straight lines were expressed in an understated form, and the grid pattern was enlarged to change the size and various colors, creating a richer screen with paint flowing on the spot where the line was drawn at once.

The series (2019) displayed on the second floor is completed by coloring it with acrylic paint on the fabric and cutting it one by one and pasting it with collage. It builds a sense of space on the screen by forming a vertical and horizontal grid frame pattern by repeatedly pasting pieces of cotton cloth on the canvas. The writer naturally leaves bumps in the process, with lines expressed differently and unintentionally resulting in another outcome. In addition, you can feel the rhythm of the lines on the flat canvas.

In addition to flat-panel work, sculptures and drawings were also installed in this exhibition. The curved installation sculpture (2020) shows the relationship of the space envisioned by the artist, and eventually, this exhibition will present a new problem of painting and objectivity in the space that the artist has always considered.

 Introduction
Born in 1961 in Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Nam Chun-mo graduated from Keimyung University's College of Fine Arts and Dong Graduate School, and is currently active in Daegu and Cologne, Germany. Inspired by the prosody of mountain ridges, stone walls, fields, etc. seen in his hometown of Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, he unravels the emotions and rhythm of nature on the screen. The artist, who tried various materials and colors, has continued to work on various works, such as applying transparent synthetic resin to the fabric, cutting the hardened fabric into the right size, setting it on the canvas, and formatively reconstructing it.

Many individual and group exhibitions were held in Korea, France, Germany, the U.S. and China, and large-scale individual exhibitions were also held at domestic art galleries such as Daegu Museum (2018) and Gyeongnam Provincial Museum (2018). In 2019, she held her first solo exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany, drawing attention from the European art scene. In particular, the exhibition collection won the visual arts category at the 54th Book Design Awards held in Berlin this year. The exhibition at the Cesson & Bénéti£re in Paris, France, which ended last month, was well-received despite the difficulties of Covid19 and was featured as a cover story for Le Quotidian de l'Art, the most viewed art magazine. His works are housed in the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Kumho Museum of Art, Daegu Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, and the Koblenz Ludwig Museum in Germany.
