Exhibition Information
Rupture : The Untitled Void presents Rupture, an exhibition of works by artist Jungwon Phee. Jungwon Phee’s artistic practice is one with precisely articulated and mapped conceptual underpinnings: the titular “path” of the series is an exploration of the ego; the black backgrounds represent the conscious “I”; the symbolic figures of layered matière express a palimpsest of subjective consciousness and experience. And then there are the questions of time, of memory and forgetting and (de)construction. A rupture can be many things: a breach in trust, a broken surface, a fracture in time, a disjunct identity. The world and the mind have countless mechanisms of disconnect that sever what was once one into two. Each painting in Rupture is a summons to enter, with intention, into this space and time outside of space and time. As adaptation — on every scale, from the individual to the communal to the global — is becoming necessary in ways and to an extent previously unforeseeable, Phee seeks an existential aesthetic comprehensive enough to embrace all. On the walls of The Untitled Void these untitled combinations of black gesso and meok (traditional ink) are portals into presence, singular and complete.
