Exhibition Information

The exhibition explores the visualization of contemporary art in variations of past and present art styles. The three artists, Kim Hong-sik, Bae Joon-sung, and Yoo Yu-jeong, create new meanings by reproducing past art styles and materials with modern techniques to elicit modern communication within the art historical context. Rather than the difficult language of contemporary art, it is easy to grasp the meaning by capturing contemporary images with classical, baroque, and traditional pottery techniques that are already familiar. It is already the way Picasso tried to put various artistic historical meanings in a work. Picasso published "Ladies of Avignon" in 1907, which introduced new ways of visualization, starting with African masks and using expressions that encompass art histories, such as painting techniques and baroque colors in Greek pottery. Since then, this method has become a norm for artists who want to renew their traditions, and audiences can easily find differences in familiar forms and feel intellectual pleasure.

It is also a characteristic of postmodernism that the styles of various eras overlap in one work. Writers who oppose modernism's authority and elitism have been newly combined using familiar styles that have already become cliches to communicate easily with the public. If previous art pursued uniformity of form and meaning, postmodernism art led to the expansion of imagination in the discord of meaning and style, creating new meanings. The loss of historical context prevented the modern art form from being integrated into a single great discourse, but there is still something in common that reflects the characteristics of the times. Various contemporary visual information and contemporary landscapes reproduced in classical styles enable exploration of the present, moving away from the era dictated by certain forms. And the three artists who participated in the exhibition can also find similarities in using different forms, materials, and materials.

Kim Hong-sik corrodes stainless steel and transcribes images with silkscreens on top of it, leaving behind the scenes observed in the city. In Kim Hong-sik's work, the gold color is repeated in the image of the work wrapped around the work and inside the frame. The real world where the work is placed and the space and space in the work are connected to each other, and it expands indefinitely like two mirrors facing each other, showing us both unfamiliarity and aesthetic pleasure by showing a transition of time and space that cannot occur in the physical world.

Bae Joon-sung adds a modern technique called lenticular to the still-life of the Rococo style, capturing one and many ambivalences in one screen, past and present. The still life painting shows that one regulation opens the door to the opposite meaning, such as the image of death in full bloom and the static behind the colorful colors. The painting depicting a child visiting the art museum was made of lenticular images of the upper center-hung with famous Baroque paintings in gold frames filled with walls. The lenticular provides a different image depending on the angle of view, making the entire work impossible to appreciate at a fixed point in time.

Yoo Yu-Jeong's bottle and ceramic sculptures include modern techniques such as transcription and ruster techniques in traditional techniques such as blue and white porcelain techniques and makeup techniques. Popular and commercial images, such as luxury brand logos and global companies' brand logos, flow over traditional patterns and formative forms and overlap. Significant features of modern culture, which adds to the sensibility of pop, clearly shows the physicalistic modern culture, expressing the unique visuality of modern times where signs such as logos, advertisement images, and autographs overwhelm the significance.

The common feature of these three writers' works is the sparkle. Kim Hong-sik's work was made of stainless steel with gold, Bae Jun-sung's work was made to look different depending on the light and angle using lenticulars, and Yoo Yu-jung's work was made to sparkle using glaze and ruster techniques. Smoothness and the sparkle that accompanies it represents a modern visualization that imitates the sense of the moment rather than deep reflection. In the works of Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, who represent the visual characteristics of contemporary art, sparkle and smoothness reveal modern physicalistic aesthetics. Han Byeong-cheol interpreted in "Save Beauty" that smoothness is a form of elimination of resistance, negativity, satisfaction, and possessiveness, which is entirely related to beauty that creates pleasure, unlike the sublime beauty that causes discomfort.

However, the exhibition's artists literally use sparkles while using several mechanisms to reserve the pleasure of immersion. Kim Hong-sik captures images of people appreciating works in art galleries and museums. The act of appreciation takes place in a special relationship between the work and the subject, and in Kim Hong-sik's work, the audience has already appeared, and the actual audience has become a third party in relation to the object of work and is hindered by immersion into the work.

Bae Joon-sung introduces a different element of "experience" from the classical way of viewing works that allows him to grasp the entire work at one fixed point using a lenticular. In order to fully understand the work, the process of changing gaze is combined to shift the limits of painting to another phase.

Yoo Yoo Eui-Jung goes beyond the stereotype of ceramic works by changing the genre of pottery originally intended for use into a form that can be appreciated. Painting techniques that flow glaze or images are openly used, and methods that make them similar to sculptures by connecting the lid to make them unusable are out of the craft category.

These three artists treat the form of smoothness, rather than smooth and commercial images, which is easily seduced, excessively superficial, or analytically used to suspend satisfaction and approach deep insights. The works of three artists, Kim Hong-sik, Bae Joon-sung, and Yoo Eui-jung, are moderate but critical attempts using solid art historical styles.
