Exhibition Information
Kim Chang-young's work begins with white lacquer, which paints the base of the canvas. White lacquer is originally a process to improve the color development of paints, but in Kim Chang-young's work, the action is applied in the opposite direction. When the white paint dries, the entire screen is finely polished. Then repeat the process of whitewashing and drying again several times. After this tedious process, the surface of the canvas becomes smooth and soft like that of white porcelain or silk, and at this point the artist begins to add colors. If we follow the movement of his distance and proximity, thick and thin, and lines in a screen that is only color, from which no narrative can be inferred, we arrive at the landscape and image the artist faces.
