Exhibition Information

			1. One of the ink-and-wash painting methods in the Chinese-characteristic cultural sphere of Northeast Asia, Hong-eun-tak-wol (烘雲托月: literally to shade in the clouds to offset the moon), depicts the blight moon on white rice paper in a light-coloured manner.

Both paper and what is to be depicted, the moon, are white but the medium of the oriental ink is black. The classical painters in the past indirectly brought out the white moon by depicting the clouds around the moon with the black ink.

It can be said that the clouds are drawn as guests to show the moon as a host. In summary, the background is there to present the main subject and thus other objects are there to show off the main object.

I the history of western painting there is a similar methodology using silhouettes. Boundaries between a host and guests are marked to show specific outlines and to define the characters. As a result, both the main subject and the background are not detailed but their forms are revealed.

The common result using Hong-eun-tak-wol in Northeast Asia and silhouette in the West is a way of not directly depicting a subject but showing it through backgrounds or boundaries.

To sum up, both methodologies commonly present a subject by revealing lines between a subject and its background.

In the moment when the clouds disappear in Hong-eun-tak-wol, the moon disappears the same way in the moment boundaries disappear in a silhouette, the subject and background disappear. When other objects, guests disappear, the main subject, the host, disappears.

2. There is interactive art asking for audience participation in the methodologies when using moving images in contemporary art.

A visual artist creates particular parts of moving images, and audiences participate, interfere, and work with them to complete the work. In this interrelated art, there is no outcome without audience.

This is the distinct methodology of creating contemporary art escaping from the representative attitude of Western art creating something out of nothing without any dependency by placing the divine authority with the artist. .

3. In this respect, the intention of the exhibition Inter-media + Inter-view aim for inter-media, inter-view, inter-relation, and inter-dependence is surprisingly interesting. It is truly a unique project and an attitude about creating art.
