On August 27th, The Untitled Void opens a solo exhibition of works by internationally renowned artist KwangHo Shin (b.1983), known for his bold use of color and matière. Presenting an array of paintings beginning with previously unseen pieces from Shin’s early years and ranging through entirely new works, “The Faces” serves as a partial retrospective of the artist’s career to date.
Shin’s paintings are characterized by his thick, layered brushstrokes. The overlapping layers of matière formed by these countless strokes, together with the liberal use of intense pigment, create a singular vision of the human face that is immediately recognizable as the artist’s own. Indeed, even more than their figurative elements, it is the bold colors of these paintings that stand as semiabstract or even abstract interpretations of Shin’s inner world. Here, rather than the portrayal of a specific individual, emotions that cannot be reduced to language have been spilled out onto canvas, at speed.
It is Shin’s hope that each person who sees one of his works is able to feel the energy of the painting itself, while also allowing their own feelings and depth of experience to frame the encounter. Shin KwangHo’s “Untitled” works require neither analysis nor interpretation; they need only be seen, and felt.
