  • BYFOUNDRY, FOUNDRY SEOUL’s platform which discovers artists working with more experimental media exploring new possibilities and supports theri creative activities, presents Seoul-based media artist Myungsik Jang’s first solo exhibition, Surreal Jelly, from 7 October to 19 December. The exhibition showcases the surreal aesthetics of shapeshifting, glairy jellies built by the artist’s infinite imagination in an unrestricted digital world. It will be an opportunity to dynamically interact with media art, which has become an important genre of contemporary art.

Inspired by the ambiguous and fluid characteristics of jelly, Myungsik Jang creates a "surreal jelly" with a shape and texture unseen in the real world. Surreal Jelly starts with an atypical drawing given a three-dimensional shape and motion. The artist then adds a translucent and shiny surface of jelly on top, to bring a familiar yet unfamiliar, specific yet ambiguous, and pleasant yet serious charm.

The exhibition will present eight artworks containing "dance" and "transformation" narratives reinterpreted through surreal jelly. The Push and Pull series depicts jellies dancing with tools within a space that responds to their movements. The interior and exterior, objects and backgrounds, and jelly and space interact according to their own unique laws of physics different from our world further, triggering the audience's imagination, providing a joy and pleasure. The Costume series, which transforms its look by changing costumes, and geometrically shape-shifting Sculptural Jelly, starts with a transforming desire to become something other than “me”. The unique colors created by overlapping different translucent layers, the fluid movements of the swimming sea anemones, and the costumes inspired by Bauhaus' stage experiments achieve a high level of visual completeness together through elaborate rendering. In Group Exercise and Group Dance, the jellies’ communal movements unfold. The choreography consists of simple, repetitive movements. Yet, performed by jellies with unique forms and textures, it creates a new visual rhythm.

Ambient sound, which surrounds the exhibition space, pulls the audience deeper into the world of the jelly. Observers can access the playlist synchronized to each work via QR codes and take a step even closer to the jellies. The overlapping sounds and looping videos give an unfamiliar cognition and sense of spatiality and temporality, adding a surreal mood to the world of jelly created by the artist.
