Exhibition Information
Kim Choon-hwan collects, groups and cuts advertising flyers, fashion magazines and promotional materials that are consumed and thrown away every day in his daily life, transforming his existing image into an independent aesthetic object. Advertising leaflets represent one-off depletion, impulsive consumption and injected desire, while simultaneously stimulating more consumption and production by stimulating economic growth and creating demand. In his work, numerous magazines and flyers are newly completed in a huge abstract pattern. Kim Chun-hwan, who recreates social media with harsh beauty and grand abstract images, is not simply "colage." From the process of material removal and the form of work, his work allows us to recognize ourselves and act as a platform to criticize it at the same time as it shows human desires. He said, Advertising Printing and Magazines are forms of art that show one side of our daily lives most clearly. Inside this, the way we enjoy ourselves by eating, drinking and wearing is very effectively captured," he said, trying to sharply recreate the individual's appearance and humanity in society. In Kim Chun-hwan's works, the cross-section shown by one-time ad prints and magazines reflects the economic, political, cultural and art aspects of our society, as well as contemporary civilization and the way we live. With Kim Chun-hwan's new 2019 "Undercurrent" series, which is newly unveiled in the exhibition, I hope it will be an opportunity to experience deep emotional insights beyond matter as well as beauty felt on the surface of his work, and to further reflect on the society and self to which we belong.
