  • Hyundai Card Storage, an exhibition space located in Itaewon, Seoul, said Thursday that it will showcase "Good Night: Energy Flash," a new interpretation of underground club culture from the perspective of modern art.
Hyundai Card recognized the underground club as a space for young people to reveal themselves and express their energy and serve as an important community in sub-culture, and prepared for the exhibition.
Hyundai Card Storage will present about 50 works by 17 domestic and foreign artists who can see how contemporary art has embraced and interpreted the underground culture.
In particular, the exhibition will feature video works by Mark Lecky, who is considered to be the most representative of British club culture, as well as photos by Wolfgang Tilmans, which capture social issues such as gentrification and outsider culture by reinterpreting the underground club culture.
In addition, one can look at contemporary art pieces based on club culture, such as surrealistic video works by "Wu Tsang," produced through collaboration by British art media Frieze and Gucci, and sound works by "Haroon Mirza," which is based on the theme of the underground club God's iconic DJ.
Hyundai Card Storage will also introduce the work of key artists of Underground Shin, including designer Ben Kelly, who designed Manchester's legendary club "Hacienda" for the first time in Korea, and DJ "Peggy Gou," who travels around the world based in Berlin.
Hyundai Card plans to transform its storage into a new art space that combines contemporary art and club culture, not just exhibition space through various works including photographs, paintings, sculptures and archives, as well as DJ booths and sound art.
"The original underground club culture incorporates free energy and various sub-culture features," a Hyundai Card official said. "This exhibition will be a valuable opportunity to meet works inspired by the underground club culture and to refill new emotions."
Tickets for the exhibition are 5,000 won for ordinary customers, and 20 percent discounts or 100 percent M-point payment benefits will be offered for Hyundai Card payments. Hyundai Card Storage runs from noon to 9 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. (Monday Closed)
