  • The Untitled Void is proud to present Constant Repetition, a group exhibition of works by Hong Gu Park, Jae Hyuk Han, and Maya Makino, from August 30 to October 16, 2022. By focusing on the physical properties of their materials, each of these artists creates non-figurative pieces through repetitive and action-intensive processes that produce delicate lines and atmospheres that capture their unique perspectives. Constant Repetition proposes a harmonious combination of sculpture and painting, bringing together distinct traits across genres.

Hong Gu Park(b.1966-) considers himself a carpenter, as his heart and attention has always been with the craft of woodworking. In his own words: “By adding nature to the black, fire-fed light, I can create beautiful patterns — and it is wood itself, full of living, breathing innocence, that bestows meaning on the scattered carpenter’s life.” Park has chosen fire as his means of approaching the essence of restriction, creating his “Carbonization Series” of works and objets after careful consideration of various carbonization techniques. Resolute and dedicated to his method, the artist values the materiality in play and the process of its transformation, melting his own life into his works.

The abstract paintings of Jae Hyuk Han(b. 1993-) evoke concentration via visual impression. Dissolving paper in liquid to return it to its primitive properties, Han uses various processes to re-create small objets that are then arrayed in a repetitive manner to form a whole. Through this simple, straightforward, almost meditative labor, the artist produces a surface of pure forms that guides us toward a process of contemplation in our own right. With these works, Han hopes to provide an opportunity for others to take a break from the controlled familiarity of their daily lives to focus on what lies within the self, if only for a moment.

Maya Makino(b. 1980-) works in a deep blue shade of indigo. Using a range of hues in a single color, Makino creates tranquil reliefs of texture and pattern, measured and contemplative. Taking inspiration from her own experiences and memories, Makino captures and expresses singular scenes in an extremely minimalist style, developing an essence and sense of completion entirely her own.
