Exhibition Information
Chris McCaw: Into the Sun is organized in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 2012 exhibition Tracing Light, held at the Datz Museum of Art. Tracing Light introduced American west coast photographers who used light and analogue photographic processes. Chris McCaw, one of the artists of the curated show, continued to draw significant attention for his works using self-adjusted, large-format cameras and vintage printing paper to create images with burnt traces of the sun. Since then, over the past decade, McCaw has maintained and expanded his unique attitude and methodology related to the photographic medium, and has established himself as an unparalleled contemporary photographer not only in the United States but worldwide. The re-introduction of Chris McCaw's work in Korea today is important because it gives us the renewed opportunity to question the true essence of the photographic medium, at a time when consumption of instantaneous photographs has become mainstream. However, this show is not about the attraction and nostalgia that comes from the artist's analogue methods of production. Rather, it emphasizes McCaw's scientific attitude, which is embedded into the physical working process involving time, space, materiality and the photographic frame, and the unique value of each piece revealed in the final product. We cannot overlook the powerful impression of each piece, in which the intense traces left by the sunlight sensuously penetrate the essence of the photographic medium as if summoning a long-forgotten primordial landscape. With the exception of some photographs, the exhibited works are unique originals, without copies or editions. The exhibition will be a precious opportunity to directly view McCaw's key works from all of his series, many of which have been collected by numerous major art museums worldwide. (...)
