BYFOUNDRY is pleased to present a two person exhibition SURFACE by Kanghyuk Choi and Sanglak Shon from March 17 to May 13, 2023. SURFACE is the second exhibition by the two artists at BYFOUNDRY following the REPEAT, the inaugural exhibition of the venue, which garnered attention for the experimental format and unique aesthetics of their artistic practices. Kanghyuk Choi and Sanglak Shon have built a body of works that intuitively recognizes the aesthetic potential of artificial materials such as airbags, nylon, polyester, and industrial hinges. They find a balance point that maximizes beauty as they foreground such potential through the process of experimentation and adjustment. In SURFACE, the two artists present a new “surface” by extending their respective investigation of materials and media. As a result, Kanghyuk Choi presents five textile works that reexamine the aesthetics of mass-produced products, reinterpreting the geometric patterns and surfaces of vintage parachutes using airbags and pressing techniques. Sanglak Shon introduces three sculptural works composed of diverse units made of processed and deconstructed industrial hinges, which have become more precise and flexible than his previous works.
