Exhibition Information
An Observer of Incomplete Lives Lim Seung-chun has been presenting conceptual sculptures and installations based on self-made fictional stories. His oeuvre is replete with fantastical elements – “a ship with three prows” and “a main character with a hump on the back and three eyes” etc. - is depicted as a dark and bizarre scene that borders on dystopia. As we trace the images of the characters struggling to survive in his works, we can easily fathom that this fictional world mirrors our own. The epic narrative, which spans more than a decade on a bold scale, touches upon the murky trends of time based on his past life. His attitude of criticizing the ailing society by somewhat detaching from the reality and resorting to the nature of fiction has partly changed with the onset the COVID-19 pandemic. During the past two years when everyone was cut off from the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lim came across each and every hidden or unknown part of the society. Real-life events that are more dramatic than novels’ and indiscriminately covered fake news forced him to isolate himself. The vague anxiety and fear that he suddenly felt in everyday life immersed him in the real world and helped him draw out the stories of today that can no longer be fulfilled by fiction.
