Exhibition Information

Art Sonje Center proudly presents Jihyun Jung: Hangdog taking place from November 3, 2023, to January 21, 2024. Jihyun Jung’s artistic exploration delves into the functionality and dynamics of sculptures, using unconventional materials such as urban driftwood and discarded industrial remnants, in response to the ever-evolving urban landscape. This process involves a continuous observation of the changing urban environment, revealing the overlapping heterogeneous spaces and the captivating landscapes that emerge from their intersections.

The title of the exhibition ‘Hangdog’ carries the essence of feeling disheartened or defeated, a term often associated with climbers who persistently tackle challenging routes without surrendering. In parallel to the structure and essence of this newly conceived term, Jung systematically examines individual materials during his artistic process, embracing unexpected material combinations and pursuing new thought avenues spurred by somewhat accidental circumstances that yield unforeseen results. His sculptures are grounded in the coincidental opportunity, intentionally dwelling in transitional states that transcend the conventional notions of object names and forms, embodying an ongoing state of flux.

This exhibition offers a glimpse into Jihyun Jung’s work over the past three years. It encompasses practice in deconstruction and reassembly of materials that have lost their original functionality and utility, the casting of fragmented sculptures with shapes that deviate from reality, and the materialization of the temporary and transient state of discarded waste through 3D scanning data, transforming the real into the sensory world of sculpture.

About the Artist

Jihyun Jung (b.1986)

Jihyun Jung’s artistic practice revolves around the exploration of the functionality and movement of sculpture, experimenting with materials such as drifting urban debris and discarded industrial elements as his creative medium. His work responds to the ever-changing urban environment, where through close exploration of its transformations, he extracts the coexisting elements that form the boundaries of urban development. Through his practice, he systematically dissects and reassembles the coexistence of discarded and recognized items, the conventional and the institutional, as well as the aesthetic and the political. Jihyun Jung’s recent solo exhibitions include Gouge hosted at Incheon Art Platform in 2022 and Multipurpose Henry at the Atelier Hermès in 2019. In 2023 he received the Kim Se-Choong Young Sculpture Award.
