			 Hakgojae Gallery proudly presents “Memory – Tang-ta-muck-ki,” a solo exhibition of Kyung-Hee SHIN (1964-2017, Seoul), on view from August 21st (Wed) to September 10th (Tue), 2019. This exhibition is dedicated to the 2nd anniversary of the artist’s passing. Works from the 1990s, in which SHIN was most active, will be on view, and works after her last solo exhibition in 2003 will be presented to the public for the first time.

 

SHIN presented the Irreconcilable Difficulties series in the 1990s. In this series, she brought out various narratives from her memories and allusively connected them to the present days. She started with smaller stories such as picture diary and hopscotch (Tang-ta-muck-ki), and extended her oeuvre into issues between the self in the present and others. She variously materialized repeated and arrayed multi-structures of figurative and abstract forms, images, and symbols into two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, prints, and installations. Shin’s ‘Quilt’ series, in particular, is her well known major work that manifests her delicate sensibility and her ability to realize contemporary forms. These elements continue in ‘Sleeping City’ and ‘Garden City’ series from the 2000s. ‘Sleeping City’ preserves the juxtaposed composition and depicts landscapes and cityscapes the artist faced during her journey back and forth from her studio near Seoul in an abstract manner. ‘Garden City’ consists of mostly large-scale paintings, and converts the images of nature into points, lines, and planes.

SHIN created her world of completeness by fiercely challenging herself on the picture screen. Editorial Director of ‘Art in Culture,’ Boggi Kim, an alumnus as well as a close friend of the artist, co-curated this memorial exhibition with Chung Woo Woo, Director of Hakgojae Gallery. Kim mentioned that “This exhibition is a great opportunity to shed new light on the artist’s status in the context of Korean art history, by calling the forgotten works of the artist who died young.”

SHIN was born in Seoul, 1964. She received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at Seoul National University, and continued her studies at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University. After returning to Korea, she became a ‘rising star’ in the Korean art world, and held solo exhibitions at institutions such as Dae Lim Art Gallery (Seoul), Ihn Gallery (Seoul). She received the grand prize at the 1st Gongsan Art Festival in 1994, and was invited to the “New Ventures - Korean Young Artists Exhibition” at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon, Korea) in the same year. She also received the 16th Award of Suk Nam Arts, which is awarded to young artists under 35. She held 10 solo exhibitions in Seoul, Melbourne, Pennsylvania, etc. Her works are a part of public collections at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon, Korea), Ewha Woman’s University Museum (Seoul), Hansol Foundation of Culture (Seoul), Sungkok Arts & Cultural Foundation (Seoul), and more. She fell ill since 2010 and passed away in 2017.
