  • Art, the work of creating human aesthetic works, seems a little bit distant from the science of universal truth and law. However, their etymology has a common origin from the ancient Greek philosophical terminology, "Techne," and technology, derived from the meaning of "build" or "produce," has evolved into the words "Technique" and "Technology," which means science and technology. 'Technet' is also translated into the Latin word 'Ars' and is the origin of the word 'Art' today.

Two areas of science and art with such common etymology have attempted to converge from ancient times to modern times. The pyramids of ancient Egypt, often called Pyramid sequence, are representative examples of sophisticated technology plus aesthetic beauty, and media art, which describes elements that could not be expressed in the past, freely and delicately, is also a modern example.

Based on this trend, GS Caltex’s Yeulmaru is planning/exhibition of experimental works that emphasize the convergence of science and art for many years, starting with 2013’s <Imagination Future Exhibition with KAIST.> In this exhibition, we prepared various works that incorporate art and principles of various sciences that we learn from art textbooks. In addition to seeing the latest trends, such as holograms using space and light, cladney patterns produced by sound and vibration, kinetic art that uses robots or motors to express movement of works, robotic art that conveys messages about human-machine relationships, virtual reality that enables visitors to experience reality in the virtual world, and image consulting using sand art and applications.

I hope that this exhibition, complete with the participation of visitors, will help visitors understand the areas of art that they felt were a component of their work and had difficulty in experiencing through the principles of science, as well as expand their creative thinking.
