  • Monstro (MONSTRO) is the name of a sea monster that resembles a whale in the animation "Finocchio› (1940). Geppetto, a carpenter who went out to sea in search of Pinocchio, is eaten by Monstro in the middle of the sea. But Monstro's body is empty and like a dead cave, Geppetto spends countless hours fishing and eating fish in the belly of a whale instead of being excreted after his tragic death. Among the exhibition’s titles, ‘IN THE BELLY OF MONSTRO’ means the inside of the Monstro.

For about two years in a Gent's apartment, the Gurminja collected what was left after eating and drinking - all kinds of shells, ears, containers and bags. In February 2018, shortly before he came back to Korea after organizing his Gent life, he opened an exhibition in his apartment showing hundreds of items classified as 382 in total. It seems to be the result of a thorough and strict collection, but it is more like a landscape formed by the growing number of things that have not been thrown away.

There can be many reasons why you can't throw it away. They are admiring daily intake and consumption, or hesitating at the moment they are about to define something as trash. Sometimes it is just an infinite fascination with the beauty of the frivolous and frivolous. What they have in common is that they are all unproductive, with the old people devoting their time and space to their lives and changing their way of life to be engrossed in this unproductive act. This very industrious lazy, obstinately hesitant practice is seen in real life or in making, but it is also in doing or disappearing. In principle, they only ate and drank.

The exhibition will consist of the first version of ‹INSIDE THE BELLY OF MONSTRO: A Whale's belly› that began in Kent, the second version that followed in Bogwang-dong, Seoul, and a variety of explorations derived from it. He made collage from a peeled shell of a potato, and all the grapes from a bunch of grapes, and spun the seed and beverage bottles into silicone molds to make ice sculptures. All of these were eaten and drank by the people who had been removed from the world.
