Exhibition Information

The Seoul Museum of History and the Korea Electric Power Corp. jointly held an exhibition to commemorate the opening of a streetcar 120 years ago. The two organizations are linked as ‘trams’ to hold exhibitions of ‘trams in Seoul’ that recall the memory of the city and the daily lives of citizens. The exhibition will feature not only artifacts from the Seoul Museum of History, but also photographs of Bostwick, the director of the Electric Museum of Korea Electric Power Corp., and records from the human resources department of the Korea Electric Power Corp.

a recent gallop

On early April, 120 years ago, streetcars opened from Donomun Gate to Heunginjimun Gate. Trains were first driven along the tracks in Jongro. In 1887, the Geoncheong Palace of Gyeongbokgung Palace was lit, and in 1897, the Korean Empire was declared in the Battle of the Chinese Empire of Deoksugung Palace. In 1899, Hanseong was established as a modern city. The tram was simply a modern sprint.

The orbits and the wheels are the feet of the people.

Korean Empire at the time of tram networks, four, begin to rise significantly after the annexation, Japanese occupation in 1943, including the branch lines in the 16 reached.

The wider the route, the more changes were made to the landscape of Seoul. A case in point is that the gate and wall of the capital city were damaged by the construction of a orbit. Nevertheless, as it was all over Gyeongseong, tramcars began to become the usual mode of transportation for people. Trains have expanded their living space between urban and suburban areas, and people's lives have changed dynamically.

the termination of a 70-year service

Recognized as the "superb" of modernization, trams that first entered the land were increasingly considered unsuitable for urban transport environments that were being reshuffled mainly by automobiles. The demolition was only a matter of time. The construction of the Sejongno Underground was the signal. The Seoul Metropolitan Government took over the tram project from the Korea Electric Power Corp. to build the underground road in Sejong-ro, suspended some of the tram operations, and took steps to remove the tram. From 1899, the train, which had been the foot of a citizen for 70 years, ended its journey.
