  • The exhibition, designed as part of the Hanwon Museum's mid-to long-term strategy, has provided promising young Korean artists with a sense of perfection and experimental spirit based on legitimacy since 2010. The main focus of the selection of the writers was their infinite potential, such as passion for work and fresh ideas, and the expectation that they would be able to show traces of their worries in exploring new experiments, challenges, and identity of their work without filtration through the new work.

Making its 11th anniversary, the exhibition <Sensory Memory> aims to provide a chance a gauge the current state of modern Korean painting and the direction of the next decade. <Sensory Memory> is not a record of natural scenery from daily observations, but rather a metaphor for psychological afterimage that evokes past experiences and memories. The purpose of observation is to find something new that is different from the existing one. If objects are identified based on sensory experience and perception, the landscape of places and things will begin to look new depending on the approach, which will soon be the starting point of macro-annotation.

The two writers, Kwon Se-jin and Jin Hee-ran, make room for interpretation at various levels, including individual emotions, experiences and memories, in their respective ways. The landscape they reproduced is devoted to exploring meaning and symbolism in the afterimage of memory, asking questions about the values inherent in the time experienced through recollection or combination of memories of the landscape that the author himself of herself has passed, as if scraping various situations connected to him. Kwon Se-jin draws a 'Sculpture Picture' which breaks down rediscovered landscapes from observations of personal interests and experiences into square-sized pieces and then recombines them into a single image, paying attention to expressing emotions and timeliness in memory through photographs. Based on the traditional painting technique, Jin Hui-ran records the story collected from the journey up and down the mountain in the eyes of a bird's-eye view from the air. I hope this exhibition will provide a glimpse into the gap between our daily lives and experiences, and what time and space distance we have, and hope that it will be an exhibition where we can reflect on and think about the surroundings us.
