Exhibition Information
2020 Lee Jung-seob Museum of Art's New Year's Invitational Exhibition <Self-portrait: Find Me> The mobile phones we use these days are developing the function of the camera with the communication function. The phenomenon of taking and recording selfies, proof shots and other terms, is very natural today and has even become a culture of an era. However, the desire to capture one's own image has long been expressed through paintings and self-portraits by artists. Self-portrait is a painting modeled on the artist. The humanistic spirit that emerged with the birth of the Renaissance in the late 14th and early 15th centuries became the basis of human-centered thought. This idea also influenced the field of art, allowing artists to explore and develop self-portraits that they draw. The term self-portrait is derived from the Latin work 'protrahere'. The word originally means "picking out, discovering, revealing" and became "portray", which means painting today's portraits. Therefore, the self-portray, which is a combination of 'self' and 'portray', simply means 'pull out, reveal'. There are many reasons why painters paint themselves. As a writer, self-portraits are often used to show self-esteem and pride, reflect on and record one's life, or to show important moments of life or inner psychology, and what is commonly found is the desire to know oneself. The desire to know oneself, then how much do we know ourselves? Who are you? If asked, how many people can answer easily without worrying? The exhibition, <Self-Portrait : Find me> offers a variety of answers to the question, "Who are you?" I hope you will have time to imagine what your self-portrait would look like while appreciating the works of artists who are looking for "me" with honest inner stories while drawing yourself.
