Exhibition Information
As the third project of Project Support Program in the visual arts sector, the Choe Soo-ryeon's personal exhibition <Pictures for Use and Pleasure> will be held. Choi Soo-ryeon has been keeping an eye on the way the classical images of Northeast Asia are reproduced at the same time, and has been working on transferring notable things to paintings in the process. In particular, it is concerned about the utility of the so-called "Orientalism", which are considered useless in real life, based on stereotypical scenes collected from classical Korean and Chinese dramatic films. The title of this exhibition, <Pictures for Use and Pleasure>, is derived from James Cahill's book of the same title, 『Pictures for Use and Pleasure: Vernacular Painting in High Qing China』, which is a direct translation of the context of the Qing Dynasty's customs from the original title. The exhibition is both practical and entertaining, and presents the author's concerns about the paintings through a series of propaganda forms, such as posters and banners that have covered Windows Gallery. Texts in the works mostly borrowed lines often appeared in Chinese or Hong Kong classic fantasy films in the 80s and 90s, such as "Taepyeong" "Niyangjin Mijong." These lines contain a worldview of punishment and a tragic/critic perception of it, which is still loosely or closely related to the absurdity of reality. [Source] Incheon Art Platform homepage
