Exhibition Information

The Art Sonje Center will host Don Sun-pil's solo exhibition. «Portrait Pist» from July 23 to September 13. Don Sun-pil has been thinking about the story of the birth process of an object or character, or how to consume it in a variety of ways, and has defined social phenomena and events from a 'figure' perspective to present three-dimensional sculptures or narrative images that match them.

This exhibition explores how we understand and consume the image of "face" today. Facing various faces in everyday life, such as real characters, portraits of actors, fictional characters of highly symbolized drawings, we judge the degree of familiarity from the face, individual status or nationality, even political position or the journey and fate of past life. This image of the face, or what we call the "face", is more than a part of the body, always replacing something.

In general, the face proves one person or entity associated with it. However, there are also faces in a foreign state that are perceived as faces, but are far from real faces. It's the face of Kara. Kara is a word derived from the character's Japanese-style reading and refers to a person's character or character in an animation. Kara's face has features, but it is empty without its role. Nevertheless, we recognize faces by looking at cartoon characters. Instead of, reproducing a particular face as shown in a photograph, Kara's face is transferred to a state close to objects.

This exhibition shows the process of being a face in various states, or a face, and redefines the features of figures that present abstract in specific states. Figures, a kind of secondary creation of characters, end up facing the problem of being "characters". If the soul in the body of the synthetic resin is a character, the setting of the character determines the state of the figure. One of the big variables contributing to the setup is the reflection of reality, and the face clearly reveals the character's relationship with reality. The exhibition explores how the image of a portrait, called a face today, drives another object while objectifying, as the title implies, the story of the power of the face that we use and are being exploited without knowing.
