			From lines

I first came across artist Yoon Sang Yuel’s works with countless and thick lines. In the series of <Optical Evidence> from 2005 to 2009, he implemented a geometrical formation on light panels by using the straight line of mechanical pencil lead, and created a combination of incidental and mystic lines by drawing countless vertical and horizontal lines in analogue and digital manners in his later series of <Silence>. The sensitive lines he drew by using different materials and work styles were seen as a sculpture to express his inner sense.

His lines consistently appear in exhibits for 《A little lower, a little higher》 held in Gallery SoSo. Their basic structure is with vertical and horizontal lines as in his prior works. Yet, these lines in the series <A little lower, a little higher> (2020) he newly conjured up look different than before: they crisscross and overlap in the piece unlike before. Diagonals appear to form a sense of tension in the piece and form new planes and spaces. He said that he thought of a jungle gym in a playground he often went to as he started working on this piece. The squarely space seeming to be structurally complete only with vertical and horizontal lines was a space for playing with friends, and a space of deep thought while perching on somewhere after everyone has left it. It was a space to arouse wide-ranging emotions in his memories.

He wished to bring in the structure of a tower-like jungle gym by thinking of the unforgettable space. Sculptural pieces of <A little lower, a little higher> (2020) in white and gray exhibited on 1F and a mid-floor are three-dimensional like a complicated circuit or a multi-dimensional space as vertical and horizontal lines are endlessly overlapped in multiple directions. His white painting on 2F of the same title has lines expressed in sunk relief to create a fine sense of space over the flat plane, and creates a visual effect as if to remain lines instead of planes as the same-colored planes are overlapped. Meanwhile, 13 works exhibited on 1F have vertical and horizontal lines repeatedly scratched off over the acrylic panel with a diagonal line passing across the center. He even created a depth in and outside the work by using a wooden box so that lines and planes created by the constantly changing light and shadows in the gallery could be incorporated into the work. Line-plane connection, depth from shadows and light and color combination in the work reveal his interest in creating physical and three-dimensional structures or spaces.

As Yoon Sang Yuel’s work started from a jungle gym this time, lines in the reality seemingly conjure up some invisible scenery, memory or image to him instead of simply indicating sculptures that are visible. I assume that his time spent and imaged on climbing up and down a jungle gym, and playing and contemplating during day and night time is well captured between countless lines in his exhibits. The pieces that he has presented in the gallery might be the outcome of his play and contemplation out of conscious, yet subconscious sentiments and senses, and his observation and imagination as such would stay next to him through by being endlessly connected and varied right beneath the surface of his works._Yoon Sujung(Gallery SoSo)
