Exhibition Information
Through Things to the Stars Spring and summer of 2019 was a hectic season preparing my solo exhibition opened in July. Starting from June, right before my solo exhibition, the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement had intensified. At that time, I could not take my mind off Hong Kong, the hometown of my husband. I could not offer any comfort. But the situation escalated to the extent I had never seen. I started worrying about the grave circumstances in Hong Kong. I also concerned about my family in law and friends. Was it a coincidence? The objects I used as motifs for my solo exhibition, the barrier, delineators, mask, goggles, spray and gloves overlapped with the news I have seen about Hong Kong. Those weak things were necessary for protecting one’s life against the polices with guns and tear gas... This contradicting situation made me feel sorry about their fight. When I started feeling oppressive about the things I would usually pass over, the time has already passed too much. I was ashamed of my ignorance and self-centered attitude, away from the world in my own studio. I reflect on my working attitude, and I realized that the meaning and weight of the objects changes depending on my interpretation. I deliver my support to Hong Kong. ■Kwon Hye Kyoung
