  • 			Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Byun Shiji(b.1926-2013) titled featuring a unique painting style of yellow clay. Byun Shiji was born in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, and moved to Japan with his family at the age of six and graduated from the Western Painting Department of Osaka Art School in 1945. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 20 and began his career as a professional artist. He studied post-modernism in Japan, focusing on portrait and landscape in connection to light and color and conceived his painting style as his own way. Although he was a Korean artist, he was the youngest to win the highest award in 1948 at the exhibition ‘Gwangpunghoe’, Japan's major art field. At the age of 24, he became the youngest winner and judge among the Japanese.
    
    The exhibition features his works from his 38 years of his life in Jeju(1975~2013) as he returned to Jeju in 1975 when he was 50 years old. The artist introduces of defeating and evolution of yellow clay and the ‘Black Sea’ series which expresses Jeju’s ocean and land by choosing black as the color of connecting the East and the West.
    
    Gana Art will refocus on Byun Shiji's paintings from his years in Jeju completed with his own unique style of painting, and will provide comfort in mind and body and the noble spirit he pursues.
