Exhibition Information

  • The truth has disappeared from the world. No, maybe it didn't exist in the first place. Truth is constructed through consistent judgment based on facts. The problem lies in facts as individuals. In other words, no facts correspond with the truth. The modern society produces and consumes information full of misunderstandings and misconceptions. Everyone knows that the historical narrative in the textbook is also an adaptation of the "history of victory." On the contrary, no one knows what truth lies in the shadows outside the lights of history. Moreover, today, the flood of fake news and distorted messages has long been out of bounds. What criteria should we screen and judge information between Too much information (TMI) and contaminated information?

In this respect, art is metaphorically revealed in response to the 'truth that has disappeared from the world'. The proposition, "Art is a fraud," presented by Paik Nam-joon, contains both the original and the ironic meaning of the sentence. In other words, it is a "playful" question to make a consistent judgment with the information presented while hiding the truth. Therefore, art makes me think about what information the writer and the work give me and what the message the work gives me. The information that the works of the exhibition hall reveal as objects is based on facts, such as the acts of the artist's painting (production of works) and the inherent nature of the works. On the other hand, the information that the writer reveals as an image is both direct and metaphorical. Then, would such utilitarian factual information and various image information suggest standards for interpreting and judging works?

Writers participating in "BE TRUE" use each work to question and answer each other's artistic judgment grounds. Writer Ha Ji-won, who faces the object for the first time in the exhibition hall, dismantles it and assembles it into a new configuration to ask about the missing or missing prototype, and writer Kwon Hyo-jung responds with the possibility of imagining the object even if it cannot be fully seen. He then asks if true peaceful coexistence can exist through his work "Peaceful Coexistence," and passes the baton. Coexistence comes from equality, and equality works as a higher concept of justice. Writer Choi Seung-Joon points out that the condition of equality cannot be met in the end as long as there is an unequal point, namely, the subject (good) and the batter (evil), from the beginning. The contaminated relationship between the subject and the batter eventually leads to extinction. Writer Kang Won-je solves the process of disappearing and re-creating with selected and unselected (winning truth and defeated truth). Disappear (damage) the finished picture, and the selected target is newly created, directing the blurred boundaries of the results and processes, reversing the end of the exhibition back to the starting point. Again, writer Ha Ji-won completely eliminates the value and meaning of objects (truths) in these blurry boundaries and removes the substance.

Writers Kang Won-je, Kwon Hyo-jung, Choi Seung-jun, and Ha Ji-won have been independent in their respective positions, and their works have various narratives that are not mentioned above. However, in this exhibition, they are neighbors as works and form an exhibition. The story that writers organize independently is an original scenario experienced and reasoned by the writer, but the exhibition, which is composed of exchanging questions and answers, is an adaptation composed of subjectively compiling and interpreting the information of the work. After all, the most important thing in collecting the given information and making artistic judgments depends on what information the subject himself or herself selects. In other words, the information I can digest becomes the truth, and the information I can't digest loses its meaning and wanders. In the exhibition "BE TRUE", we hope to be the subjects of each person's own "Truth Game" and enjoy the exhibition by adapting it.
