Exhibition Information
Gana Art Sounds is pleased to announce An Sungha’s solo exhibition 《Still》 held both online and offline, reflecting the current trend of contact-free communication through online. This exhibition is an opportunity to experience the artist’s recent works from her long-sought “candy” series as well as her sharp and unique insight into modern society. The exhibition mainly consists of small-sized paintings which were created through the process of resizing the previous works from her “candy” series. Daily preferences, such as candies that are sweet and tempting to eat but never good for the body, give modern people a sense of freedom and pleasure from complex daily life. Through the repetition of images, An Sungha captures the twofold nature of candy and an aspect of modern society. It is noteworthy that recent works from her “candy” series are followed by the “soap” series that was introduced to the public for her solo exhibition in 2019. Candy as an object that An Sungha has been painting for a long period of time is considered to be an icon representing the artist herself. In the last exhibition, however, the artist did not settle down and displayed a new series with hyperrealistic images of a soap positioned in the center of the canvas screen, breaking away from the existing way of placing an object in a glass bowl. In this series of work where the background is left as white, viewers can focus solely on what is on the screen, and through the process, they can explore abstract elements such as dots, lines and planes that make up the screen. With this achievement, the candy she re-painted shows different characteristics that were never seen before. Comparing to her previous works, where transparency of glassware and candy and hyperrealistic depictions of them were prominent, the candy in the latest painting is characterized by its floating composition along with the lines and planes that have blurred the boundaries between objects. The exhibition title 《Still》, which is derived from the term “Still-life”, contains a double meaning that An Sungha’s serene paintings, similar to still pictures capturing everyday moments, presents peaceful moments to visitors in this turbulent situation. It is also hoped that the exhibition consisting of the artist’s latest works where she still paints the same objects but discovers new possibilities will deliver fresh energy to the visitors.
