  • Historical philosopher Hans Georg Gadamer suggests "talking to history" as a way to broaden the horizon of understanding of the present. This means that in the process of looking back on history to diagnose now, we can discover the standards and biases inherent in us, and practice them as a dialogue through artwork and text.

At first glance, the Covid-19 era is seen as an era occupied by unpredictable pandemics. However, considering the current era, which includes the potential for the future from a macro perspective, it is also a "predictable era" to some extent, combining the ever-growing data on pandemics, historical events in the past, and the possibilities that artists assumed and worried about. As Gadamer said, the question, "Then what works of art should we practice historical dialogue?" became the starting point for the idea of the "Era of Gray ."

Gray. It has the dictionary meaning of 'black with white color like ash'. This ambiguous color of justice, which contains "white" and "black" at the same time, is represented as a medium color. In a political sense, the Gray Zone was used as a color of similar symbols for artists, just as it meant a middle ground where it was unclear to order that it belonged to a particular area. Gerhard Richter, also known as "Gray (Gray), 1968", called gray "a color that says nothing" and added that it does not evoke any emotion or age. In this context, the Aggregation series, which will be shown in "The Age of Gray," returns us to the starting point of the direction of inventory and attitude that we should have when we measure the future after Corona in the symbolic gray of Jeon Kwang-young. The Jeon saw the canvas and hanji pieces of the work as "a window that projects the curves of human and world history." The pieces of hanji in the work have individual directions, but they show the phenomenon of understanding, consulting, and harmonizing with each other. Furthermore, by adding gray in the enemy's meaning of "saying nothing," it throws more opportunities for interpretation and reasons for the viewers. In other words, visitors will build a window of conversation with the writer to diagnose the present from each individual's point of view and present the future of the Corona era through the window of Jeon Kwang-young.
Corona pandemics from around the world have left the challenge of causing situations in which existing systems do not function normally and approaching the phenomenon with a new paradigm. The current pandemic that mankind is going through maybe a history of positive change or an era close to the black, where division is rampant. Paradoxically, mankind is at a crossroads in the gray era. As Gadamer advised, we reconsider the perception and prejudice that has been "ordinary" through our encounter with historical works of art. Through this exhibition, we will ask what we can think of as a starting point for imagining the future in the gray era.
