Exhibition Information

R Collective will host Jung Goyona's solo exhibition "Filtering" from February 18 to March 27. In this exhibition, Jeong Go-na visualizes the phenomenon and emotions of obsession with social networking on SNS through the act of "filtering" in the corona 19 Pandemic situation, which began in early 2020. Formally, based on his long-standing concerns and practices as a conversationalist, he aims to reveal his self-hypnotized ambiguous relationship—desire that goes into the virtual world of the Untact era.

< filtering> has worries as a painting artist who have served more than 10 years. In the previous work, if the artist's one-sided and controlling eyes were to be dismantled through live drawing connected to the user through live cameras or photos, the new work in this exhibition will actively focus on revealing the contemporaries by using SNS. The activation of SNS within a social structure in which individual branding and self-PR are emphasized is an important means of solidifying the social network. The author selects images of individuals such as selfies that actively use SNS uploaded online, and draws the individual's desire to prove their relationship with social interest through the process of filtering editing and moving them to the screen. Through this process, the 'drawing' artist's actions are eventually replaced by objective texts. In other words, the author reads contemporary emotions and desires cross-edited in two directions by performing "drawing" acts with thin grids like SNS pictures, brush strokes that do not reveal different eyes, and cold sensations with low chroma. Through this experiment, they are attempting artistic exploration and contemporary experiments on pictorial elements in the rapidly changing era of Untact.

Jung Goyona began her career as a artist, especially by recording her daily life like a photograph. The "Live Campaigning Live Cam Painting" series, which was first attempted in the 2016 individual exhibition "The Purpose of Memory", was a media painting that depicts real-time changes in silhouettes of characters moving on a canvas or OHP film. This was an attempt to dismantle the unilaterally controlled pictorial output that contained the process of interactive communication. In the process of becoming more digital in society and the development of the Internet, the author, who was interested in actively sharing and observing individual's daily lives online, naturally turned to contemporary characteristics of virtual images uploaded on SNS.

Now, SNS activation has opened a platform where anyone in the public space can spy on a manipulated private and manipulated image of the uploaded subject. As a result, the act of sparring, which is a communication between writers and subjects through SNS, will be justified in going through the process of public performance without negative attributes. Jeong Go-na captures the image uploaded online through filters and has ambivalent aspects as an image of the subject itself and the desire to be conscious of others or the desire to be shown. Images that are only shown through the criteria of coordination and self-censorship become images that do not exist but exist at the same time, forming a point where the distinction between virtual, real and reality becomes meaningless. The author once again puts a filter on it and moves it to the screen, questioning, "Maybe we are expressing the loneliness and desire for relationships in modern people's lives while living an edited daily life and having relationships with people we met online." Virtualization is already coming all over and deep into our lives, bringing comfort, self-satisfaction, and enjoyment to the fact that reality cannot be filled.
